Many of us trust our banks and financial advisors with our personal information. But an NBC 6 investigation found an Arklatex company throwing people's social security numbers and account statements in a dumpster.
Nbc 6 reporter Karen Hopkins did some digging after receiving a tip from a viewer about personal information thrown in this dumpster. We found dozens of retirement account statements. More than half had social security numbers. All had personal addresses and account ID numbers. We reported it to Bossier City police.
Police say the documents came from SouthTrust advisors off airline road. The financial planning company has offices in Bossier City, Monroe and Slidell. SouthTrust would not comment on the documents.
Police say no one is getting arrested. Throwing away personal information is not a crime. So companies are allowed to throw out people's personal information in dumpsters? “There's not state law that prohibits that,” Bossier public information officer Mark Natale says.
But we want to warn you, inside the dumpster Nbc 6 found social security numbers from people across the Arklatex. In Shreveport, Haughton, Minden, Monroe, Farmerville, Eros, and Downsville Louisiana.
We also found personal information from people in Texas,
including Orange, Port Neches, Vidor and Deweyville.
